New Razor Blade Throat COVID Variant Spreading: Symptoms, Impact, and Vaccine Effectiveness"

June 18, 2025 — Health News

A new COVID-19 variant, designated NB.1.8.1 and informally known as "Nimbus," has been rapidly spreading globally, including in California. This variant is characterized by a notably painful sore throat, often described by patients as feeling like "razor blades" in the throat. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified Nimbus as a "variant under monitoring" due to its increased prevalence and potential for immune evasion.

Symptoms:
In addition to the severe sore throat, common symptoms of the Nimbus variant include fatigue, mild cough, fever, muscle aches, and congestion. Less common symptoms may include nausea or diarrhea.

Spread and Vaccine Effectiveness:
Nimbus has been detected in at least 13 U.S. states, including California and New York. Health experts note that while the variant is more transmissible, current COVID-19 vaccines remain effective in preventing severe illness. Updated booster shots are recommended to maintain protection.

Management and Prevention:
For those experiencing the "razor blade throat" symptom, healthcare professionals recommend staying hydrated, consuming warm fluids, and using throat lozenges. Over-the-counter pain relievers may also help alleviate discomfort. Continued adherence to preventive measures, such as wearing masks and practicing good hand hygiene, is advised to reduce transmission.
